Kindergarten

Term 1

1. Who am I?

Students use fun activities to tell others and talk about who they are and they also meet their classmates and the teacher. They listen to others introducing themselves and make a poster about themselves.

2. My family

Students learn relationships and their specific names in Punjabi. They watch videos and play games to build their knowledge. Students display their learning by making a family tree and participate in a show and tell to talk about their family.

3. Showtime

Students listen to stories about animals. They play games to learn names of animals in Punjabi. Students work in groups and create animal puppets with paddle-pop sticks and use them to tell their own stories. Students listen to each group’s stories and vote to select the best ones.

Term 2

1. Around the world

Students use maps to learn about countries/regions around the world with Punjabi speaking populations. They research and discuss the flags, culture and food of these countries/regions using story/video/images. They engage in various group activities and use games to find more facts about their chosen countries. At the end of the unit, groups present their maps to the class and talk about  the countries on their map.

2. Let’s sing a song

Students listen to poems based on their language ability. They pick a few poems and learn them by saying them loud and try to make a song from them. They play games such as hide and seek while singing traditional Punjabi song.

3. Let’s dance

Students watch vidoes and learn the stepd of giddha and bhangra- the folk dances of Punjab. They talk about why people dance and its cultural significance.

Term 3

1. My favourite animal

Students talk about their favourite animal and they engage in play-based activities to improve their knowledge about animals and habitats. This topic is based on an excursion to a zoo and post-excursion activities will encourage students to talk about environmental protection. Students also listen to stories about animals and human interaction with them.

2. My favourite food

Students talk about foods that they like and why. They watch videos, listen to a story and engage in hands-on activities to talk about food. In the process, they learn about names of food items in Punjabi and improve their vocabulary.

Term 4

1. Storytime

Students listen to their teacher telling stories from the Punjabi School website and answer simple questions in Punjabi. They use prompts to come up with a story and participate in group work to make hand puppets and tell their own stories.

2. Whose turn is it?

Students learn Punjabi painti akhar (Gurmukhi script) using games and over a 7 week period. An option is to get the students to learn akhar over the course of the year using the lesson materals.

Term 1

1. Introducing friends

Students introduce themselves to other students using visual supports such as photos/pictures. They construct a speech to introduce their friend to the class, listen to a story and play a game.

2. Guess who?

Students create a character profile for a famous personality. They compete with others individually or in groups using simple yes and no questions or games to try and guess the name of each other’s chosen personality.

3. Games and songs

Students, in groups, play games, sing songs and poems in Punjabi. They build communication skills and use them to have conversations and discussion with each other.

Term 2

1. Colours, shapes and numbers

Students learn new Punjabi vocabulary – colours, shapes and numbers (ginti). They play games, listen to poems and stories and watch videos to make learning fun and engaging.

2. Home time

Students build their vocabulary with names in Punjabi of things found commonly at home. They listen to a story of a rabbit who becomes a chef, play games and watch videos of children cooking simple dishes at home.

Students learn the names of animals and birds from India and Australia in Punjabi. They learn about animal habitats and food they eat with a visit to the local zoo. At the zoo they get to meet native Australian animals close and listen to the experts to learn more about them.

1. Puppets are fun

Students make hand and stick puppets, watch a video and use a script to create a puppet show.

Term 4

1. Dress ups

Students use their knowledge of cultures from around the world to dress up and display their knowledge.

Students follow instructions to make a collage using colours and pictures.

 3. Song, dance and drama

Students present a song/dance item at the annual school function.

Year 2

Term 1

1. Family and friends

Students learn vocabulary and expressions to introduce their family or friends. They create and illustrate a photo book with pages dedicated to close family members or friends. Students introduce their family members or friends to the class using teacher-modelled language.

Term 2

1. Food is good

Students learn about Punjabi eating etiquette. They gather information about popular Punjabi dishes from documentaries and cooking shows and learn vocabulary for food and/or ingredients. Students create a class cookbook with their own recipes under teacher guidance and/or create a journal entry or a vlog with captions about their experience.

Lesson materials including muharni, speaking practice, new vocabulary, writing recipes, crossword, spelling test.

3. Stories from far and wide

Students participate in shared stories with the teacher with a particular focus on intonation and rhythm. They learn how different intonation patterns are used to express different feelings. Students learn to recognise different sentence forms, such as questions, statements and commands. They create a storybook using pictures and simple captions retelling the plot of a shared story. Students use puppets and props to retell the story to the class using appropriate intonation for different sentence patterns.

Term 3

1. Animals are fun

Students learn about pets/farm animals through teacher narratives and Punjabi mythology and children’s stories. Students learn the vocabulary for pets/farm animals and explore how language is used differently to reflect different relationships. Students create a face painting, mask and/or costume of their favourite pet/farm animal. They participate in a short class play where each student is taking the role of an imaginary pet/farm animal.

Term 4

1. Song and dance

Students learn about how local Punjabi communities express their culture through dance. They access authentic dance performance and respond to the rhythm of the dance music using hand and foot gestures. Students mimic the movement of the dance and indicate how it makes them feel with symbols or visual representations. They learn the language of instruction and follow simple instructions for a traditional Punjabi dance. If appropriate, students perform the dance at a school assembly or in class.

2. We are united

Students gather information about important Punjabi festivals or celebrations and make comparisons with celebrations in Australia, including those of Aboriginal communities and Torres Strait Islander communities. Students learn vocabulary and expressions to describe events and experiences. Students create a digital class story about a festival or celebration of their choice.
